Big Mind Four Week International Conference

October 25 – November 22, 2008

We’re getting everything lined up for our biggest event of the year. This will be the Sixth Annual Big Mind Four-Week International Conference.

If you want to do some seriously intensive Big Mind work with the guy who invented it, have a great time with about 100 other people who are working on the same questions you are, be served three monstrously good vegetarian meals a day, meditate in a beautiful room, and then go for a hike up the mountain…well, you better sign up soon! Our place is only so big.

You can come to any individual weeks or for the whole month. Early Birds get a shot at actually staying here at Kanzeon Zen Center. Call to make a reservation. It’s dormitory style where you share a room, but it’s a great place to stay and only $35 per night.

These once a year events have been attended by hundreds from around the world and are not to be missed. If you can only do something like this once a year, do this one, seriously.

If that wasn’t enough, besides working closely with Genpo Roshi for up to four weeks, Diane Hamilton Sensei will also be leading the morning sessions every day. If you haven’t heard of Diane, look her up. One of the truly original and great women teachers in America, a professional mediator, a Zen Sensei, and our top Big Mind Facilitator. Oh, did I mention she also teaches for Ken Wilber’s Integral Institute? Diane rocks!

See what I mean? This is a four-week window of opportunity that doesn’t open again until November 2009. Even one week of Big Mind will leave you with something you’ll never, ever forget. I really hope you can be here

Space is limited.

Rohatsu Big Mind Zen Retreat 2008

December 7 – 14

When is a Retreat not a retreat?

Zen Retreats are supposed to deepen and intensify your spiritual practice, and your life. But sometimes you just get more and more stuck in the same rut, going nowhere.

Great teachers all the way back to Buddha himself have insisted that the Way is all about getting unstuck. Now Genpo Roshi brings together the essential best of East and West in a liberating Retreat that combines daily Big Mind work with traditional focused practice — breaking down mental walls, untying emotional knots, joyously moving forward.

The Big Mind Zen Retreat
It’s an Advance.

All are welcome and beginners are given special support.

Retreats

Week long retreats held at Kanzeon Zen Center in Salt Lake CIty typically follow the schedule below. The dress and atmosphere is casual and open, with plenty of time to meet others and share your experiences. The Kanzeon Zen Center staff (about 14 mostly resident monks) is always around to answer any questions you have and make you feel at home.

Meals

We work hard to prepare and serve the best organic vegetarian food we can buy or grow ourselves. We provide breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can also go out to one of the several restaurants nearby if you choose. For some of our more traditional Zen retreats we eat two meals a day “oryoki style”. Don’t worry if you haven’t tried it before, we have classes on how to eat a meal in this beautiful and traditional zen way. For details on your particular event, give us a call at 801-328-8414.

Housing

We have room for about 35 people to stay here at Kanzeon Zen Center. Rooms are dormitory style with 2-4 people per room. If you would prefer a room by yourself there are two Bed & Breakfast establishments nearby and all the usual hotels downtown. Kanzeon Zen Center is twelve blocks east of downtown, so you may like to have a car to use to go back and forth. We have Wireless Internet in all of our buildings and there are places to set up your laptop. Our offices have print and FAX facilities if you need them.

Weather, etc.

The weather is always a factor to plan for in Salt Lake City. It can be quite cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. Spring and fall can be hot in the day and cold at night. Because of the altitude (5000ft) the sun is very bright year around so sunglasses and sunscreen are good to have if you plan on being outside much. We’re very close to the mountains and there are several good trails within walking distance so bring some good shoes also. It’s quite dry here, so be sure to drink lots of water and use lotion on your skin while you are with us.

We keep the Zendo (meditation hall) cool all the time so bring warm socks. For meditation, we recommend comfortable dark clothes (sweats or yoga clothes are fine). We’re well stocked with meditation cushions and provide chairs for anyone who likes to meditate sitting up.

Please feel free to contact us if you have special needs or any questions about your stay here.
